ALERT: Is Free Facebook Or Free Basic Really Free?
#1
Internet.org is a partnership between social networking services company Facebook and six companies (Samsung, Ericsson, MediaTek, Opera Software, Nokia and Qualcomm) that plans to bring affordable access to selected Internet services to less developed countries by increasing efficiency, and facilitating the development of new business models around the provision of Internet access. The app delivering these services was renamed Free Basics which Free Facebook is a part of in September 2015. As of November 2016, 40 million people are using internet.org.
My attention was drawn to this topic after a fellow blogger Oyeniyi Abiola Peace made a revelation which i confirmed about Free Facebook, Free Facebook and Free Basic in general is criticized to for violation of net neutrality. Net Neutrality is a kind of principle that guides the internet, without it, it really won’t be Internet. Net Neutrality means an internet that enables and protects free speech. It means that ISPs should provide us with open networks — and shouldn’t block or discriminate against any applications or content that ride over those networks. Just as your phone company shouldn’t decide who you call and what you say on that call, your ISP shouldn’t interfere with the content you view or post online. Which is exactly what Free Facebook is violating stripping down the Facebook website to a text only version.

In Nigeria or other countries that use Free Facebook, after over 7-8 posts you ought to see an ad, which is over 8 ads per 50 post i guess. I was actually opportune to login into one of my friend’s USA Facebook account, unbelievably the ad-rate is just a ad to 10 post or so. I would quote what a the co-blogger wrote on his timeline.
Quote:
According to research 29% of Nigerians use free facebook at an given time. Now lets do mathematics, those that use data are 71% right.
Now the normal ads view for USA is 5 per 50 or 10 per 100 posts. 100% of USA uses data right? My formula below:
Percentage of people using data ÷ 100% × number of ads per 100 post = 10
USA CALCULATION: 100 ÷ 100 × X = 10
X = 10 ads per 100 post for USA
NIGERIA CALCULATION: 71 ÷ 100 × X = 10
X = 10 ÷ 14 ads per 100 posts.

That isn’t fair right, Free Facebook totally violates the net neutrality, violates our internet experience. Please share.
