Facebook's Mumbai Office Searched, Read Why
#1
BENGALURU/MANGALURU: Police on Thursday searched the Facebook office in Mumbai after the social network failed to share information on the profile of a Mangaluru man who had allegedly posted derogatory content about Hindu goddesses. Mangaluru police had registered a case against the accused, who is on the run, and had booked Facebook for non-cooperation.

. . Mangaluru police sources said the cops carried out the operation at Facebook's office in Bandra-Kurla Complex after securing a search warrant from a Mangaluru court. The profile is in the name of Jabbar BC Road alias Kudroli.
.
. "Jabbar had posted demeaning content pertaining to the goddesses on Facebook. It was widely circulated on social media and WhatsApp, and sparked communal tension in Mangaluru," said an investigating officer.

. . A few months ago, the cops had registered a case under IPC's Section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting religious beliefs). However, the investigation reached a dead end with Facebook stonewalling requests from the police top brass.

. . "Despite repeated requests, including letters from senior police officials, the company refrained from providing the information. We registered a case against Facebook under Section 176 of the IPC (omission to give information to public servant by person legally bound to give it) and obtained a search warrant," said the officer.

. . Mangaluru police commissioner M Chandra Sekhar said: "We had served them notice to provide us evidence which was needed to file the chargesheet. As Facebook's response was not satisfactory, we had no choice but to take legal recourse."

. . Sources said Facebook representatives have assured Mangaluru police that all information pertaining to the profile will be provided within 48 hours.

. . When contacted, Facebook officials declined to comment on the matter.

. . A person from Chikkamagaluru had been arrested in connection with the case.
